PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Authorities say a bridge connecting New Hampshire and Maine that was damaged by an oil tanker could remain closed until Memorial Day weekend.
Meanwhile, transportation officials say a barge, crane and other materials are being floated to the site of the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge on Thursday.
Damaged steel is being replaced. The bridge has been closed to vehicle traffic since the tanker struck it on April 1.
One factor contributing to the delay is the need to build a new support structure in the river while repairs are under way.
With the bridge closed and the new Memorial Bridge under construction, the only bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine, open to traffic is the Piscataqua River Bridge on Interstate 95.
