PORTLAND — Red Sox right-hander John Lackey made a successful rehabilitation start for the Portland Sea Dogs on Monday night at Hadlock Field.
Pitching in 43-degree weather, Lackey threw three shutout innings and part of a fourth before being lifted after 67 pitches against the Binghamton Mets, who managed three singles but struck out five times, all of them on called third strikes.

Lackey was making his first appearance since suffering an injury to his right biceps muscle on April 6 at Fenway Park. He faced 15 batters and started 11 of them with a strike. He walked two batters, induced five ground-ball outs and one fly out.
After Sea Dogs manager Kevin Boles removed Lackey from the game with two out in the top of the fourth because of a pre-determined pitch limit, many in the small crowd at Hadlock stood and cheered, and Lackey acknowledged the applause with a wave of his hand before ducking into the Portland dugout.
Red Sox left-hander Craig Breslow is scheduled to make a rehabilitation appearance Tuesday night at Hadlock.
