WATERVILLE — A Thomas College student lost her car to a vehicle fire Wednesday afternoon.

Lt. Scott Holst said the Waterville Fire Department is not sure what caused the car engine to catch fire; and the driver, Emily Jordan, told firefighters she did not know of her 2000 Pontiac Grand Am having any mechanical problems.

Holst said Jordan told firefighters that the car caught fire while she was returning to the campus parking lot.

Holst said eight Waterville firefighters went to the parking lot around 12:45 p.m. Campus security had put out most of the flames using fire extinguishers before help arrived, he said.

The car was a total loss because of fire and smoke damage, Holst said.
