A downy woodpecker pecks a stop sign on Cottage Street in Fairfield this week. According to nearby homeowner Trevison Hardy, the bird began his daily routine of beating the sign a month ago. The metal tapping noise can be heard a long way off. “He does it every day and all day,” Hardy said. “I think it’s funny.” Hardy added the bird may be trying to attract a mate.
