The school board of Regional School Unit 12 has approved a budget and set dates for a second attempt at getting voters to approve it.

The board reduced spending by $116,000 to reach a $26.4 million budget. The district also will receive more state aid than originally anticipated, so the amount to be raised in local taxes is down by $445,630, to $15 million.

The year-to-year increase in local taxes would be 4.6 percent, but the new cost allocation method means that the change will range from a decrease of 5.3 percent in Westport Island to an increase of 16.4 percent in Windsor.

The other towns in the district are Alna, Chelsea, Palermo, Somerville, Whitefield and Wiscasset.

RSU 12 voters rejected the first budget 468–409 on June 28.

The new regional budget meeting, at which voters can make amendments, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at Whitefield Elementary School. The districtwide referendum will be held Sept. 10.
