The Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance will celebrate the Maine outdoors with its annual Midsummer Celebration Saturday at 406 Halldale Road, in Montville. The event will feature two workshops followed by a potluck picnic with live music and the summer lottery drawing.

The event will include a walk with Mike Beaudry, local historian, on early European settlers and the politics of the land at the Sheepscot headwaters. Participants will journey on foot and into history to the old mill site at the headwaters of the Sheepscot River — perhaps the first dam built in the area. Beaudry will share a glimpse into the history of the land, including how people shaped the land and were shaped by it.

In addition, Terri-Lynn Fowler, educator and outdoor enthusiast, will encourage children to focus on using all five senses in nature with ecology games and sensory activities. This activity is available to participants of all ages.

Registration for the event begins at 9:30 a. m. with both activities starting at 10 a.m. and ending before the potluck picnic at noon. The picnic will feature music by Ando Anderson and Wes Cotton. The winning tickets for SWLA’s summer lottery will be drawn and announced at 1 p.m. during the picnic. The event will be held rain or shine.

The event is free to members and all are welcome come and join SWLA. The Green Store, in Belfast, has donated a discount on store merchandise for all new members in 2013.
