Black ice skid puts car on guardrail
MONMOUTH — A Winthrop woman escaped injury Thursday when her car skidded on black ice and wound up on top of a guardrail over Cobbossee Stream.
Sarah-Elizabeth Ducharme, 26, who was alone in the vehicle, was badly shaken by the crash but declined medical attention, said Monmouth Police Officer Mike Parshall.
Ducharme was driving her 2006 Ford Escape west on Route 135 around 5:45 a.m., when her car skidded on black ice as it rounded a sharp corner near the Cobbossee Stream bridge. The sport utility vehicle skidded across the road and wound up on top of the low guardrail that spans the length of the bridge.
“It skidded about 100 feet down the guardrail,” Parshall said. “She told me she could see the stream.”
Route 135 was reduced to one lane until the Escape was towed away. Parshall said the vehicle is likely totaled.
Fog, coupled with temperatures that hovered right around the freezing mark, created pockets of black ice across the region, Parshall said.
“It was nasty,” he said.
