Big Brothers Big Sisters orientation and professional match support help navigate each relationship as it grows and strengthens

SKOWHEGAN — Cindy Wyman and her “little sister” Jennie Rollins, give back to the organization that brought them together at last year’s Bowl for Kids’ Sake in Skowhegan. Wyman and Rollins were matched as part of a professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring program through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine, according to a press release from the organization.

When Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine expanded its service area last year to include mentoring programs for children facing adversity in Kennebec and Somerset counties, Wyman, of Norridgewock, was among the first to sign up.

“I was at a point in my life that becoming a “Big” was exactly what I wanted and needed,” said Wyman in the release. “When I heard Big Brothers Big Sisters was coming to my area, I contacted them immediately.”

And like many new volunteer mentors, she had some apprehensions, lots of questions and was anxious to find the perfect match. She completed the application process, including meeting with program staff, sharing her interests, completing mentor training and an extensive background check for safety.

“Before I knew it, they were calling to let me know they had a potential match,” Wyman recalled in the release. “I was so excited. We had our first meeting. I was very impressed with the process.” After spending time with Rollins she quickly decided they were perfect for each other.

“Jennie and I talked about our likes and dislikes and had the opportunity to really interact,” said Wyman in the relase. “Jennie and I decided right then and there we were a match and wanted to set up our first time together.”

January is National Mentoring Month. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine changes the lives of 560 children in Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, Somerset and Waldo counties facing adversity for the better, forever by providing strong and enduring, professionally-supported, one-to-one relationships.
