The driver of an SUV was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by helicopter Tuesday night after crashing at Exit 133 on Interstate 95 in Fairfield, according to police.

The name of the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was being withheld because his family had not been notified, according to Trooper Joseph Chretien, of the Maine State Police.

The man’s vehicle struck a utility pole and the exit sign on the southbound exit ramp and rolled over, Chretien said.

The accident, which was reported around 7:07 p.m., backed up southbound traffic for at least a mile. The northbound lanes also were closed until about 8:15 p.m.

Fairfield police, state police, Fairfield Fire and Rescue, Delta Ambulance and LifeFlight responded The helicopter was dispatched at 7:21 p.m and arrived at 7:48 p.m., according to the Somerset County police report log.

The accident is under investigation and alcohol use is believed to be a factor, Chretien said.
