AUGUSTA — Kaplan University Maine is creating a competitive scholarship for upcoming community college students graduating with an associate degree who want to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Each of the three Kaplan campuses in Maine — in South Portland, Lewiston and Augusta — will award one full scholarship covering tuition, fees and books for a bachelor’s degree program in the student’s chosen field of study, according to a news release from the for-profit college system. In addition, one runner-up from each campus will be awarded a 50 percent scholarship.

“We know that Maine lags behind the other New England states in the percentage of its citizens who hold a bachelor’s degree or above,” Christopher Quinn, president of the Maine campuses of Kaplan University, said in the release. “We are making this commitment to help increase the quality of the Maine workforce and to help the state achieve its college attainment goals.”

Kaplan University says it offers a career-focused bachelor’s degree programs through its ground campuses and its online education division in fields including nursing, information technology, and early childhood education.

John Fitzsimmons, president of the Maine Community College System, said in the release that the scholarships “recognize the talent and drive of Maine’s community college students and will assist our graduates in achieving their goal of a four-year degree.”

Applications are available by emailing ccscholarship@kaplanuniversity.edu. Questions about the scholarship may be sent to Bethany Tweed, assistant director of enrollment management at the South Portland campus, at 221-8704.
