Shots were fired and public access to a section of downtown Mexico was shut off Sunday night as a result of a standoff between police officers and a man who authorities allege stole a pickup truck.

The incident began around 7 p.m. Sunday when a “lone male” suspected of stealing a pickup truck was located at the Circle K convenience store and gas station on Main Street in the Oxford County town, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

McCausland described the situation as a standoff with state, Mexico and Rumford police, and deputies from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.

Shots were fired by the man, but McCausland was unable to provide any details. He said no injuries have been reported by officers.

Two or three state police negotiators had been sent to Mexico by press time last night and will “try to open some lines of communication,” McCausland said.
