BANGOR— Maine’s third-largest city has a new fire chief, and he’s a familiar face in the department.

City Manager Catherine Conlow announced Monday that Assistant Chief Thomas Higgins has been promoted to chief.

The appointment is subject to the approval of the city council at its Jan. 26 meeting.

Higgins was selected from a field of 26 candidates, some from out of state. He is the former fire chief in Hermon.

Conlow says Higgins has the “knowledge, experience, education and professionalism necessary” to lead the department.

Higgins calls his appointment an “honor.”

Higgins lives in Bangor with his wife, Tammy, and their two children.
