The Gardiner City Council renewed City Manager Scott Morelli’s contract at its meeting Wednesday night for another three years without a guaranteed pay increase.

However, Morelli, who has served as city manager since March 2010, has been making $7,000 more than his base salary of $80,000 this year after taking on additional duties when the city eliminated the director of economic and community development position in December.

Both parties agreed that Morelli, 39, shouldn’t get a raise because of the expected budget shortfall next fiscal year and because the city wasn’t able to offer other staff a cost of living increase this year, according to a news release from the city.

“I appreciate having the confidence of the City Council and will continue to work hard for them and the citizens of Gardiner for at least the next three years,” Morelli said in the release. “There are so many individuals and groups doing fantastic things for Gardiner right now, and I’m proud to be a part of that. I am excited to continue working with the council, staff and members of our community to keep Gardiner moving forward.”

Councilors can still provide annual cost-of-living or merit-based raises to Morelli during the course of the contract.

Mayor Thomas Harnett said in the release that he’s happy that the city will have Morelli as its chief administrator for the next three years.

“The City Council and I appreciate all of the skills and talents that he brings to our community and look forward to working together as we continue to make Gardiner a great place to live, work, raise a family or just visit,” Harnett said.

Morelli previously worked in Framingham, Mass., as the executive assistant to the town manager. Morelli, a Bangor native, lives in New Gloucester with his wife and three daughters.
