ROCKLAND – The Farnsworth Museum will close for a month for building improvements, and the Olson House in Cushing will be closed throughout 2015, the museum announced Friday.
The museum recently secured funding for capital improvements, which will include new roofs for the Morehouse Wing and the main building, new boilers for the main museum and the Wyeth Study Center and the conversion of its heating system from oil to propane.
The funding comes through Maine’s New Markets Tax Incentive Program as well as a federal New Markets Tax Credit, according to a museum news release.
“The allocation of these funds will allow the Farnsworth to undertake vital capital improvements to almost all of our properties, ensuring stability for the museum for years to come,” director Christopher Brownawell said in a statement.
The U.S. Congress established the New Markets Tax Credit program to spur investments in low-income communities. The program is designed to attract investors in return for tax credits. The Maine program is modeled on the federal program.
Funders for the Farnsworth project include CEI Capital Management, the Massachusetts Housing Investment Corp. and U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corp.
The main building will close April 13 and reopen May 16.
