SOUTH PORTLAND — Dan Foley waited 14 years to get on “Survivor,” and he’s lasted longer than most folks do.
The 48-year-old postal worker from Gorham, who had been trying to get on the CBS reality show since 2000, survived the 11th episode of “Survivor” on Wednesday night. He’s now one of just seven people left competing for the show’s $1 million prize. This season’s episodes began Feb. 25 with 18 competitors. The episodes were filmed in Nicaragua over 39 days last August and September.
Foley watched Wednesday’s episode with about 200 fans and friends cheering him on at Thatcher’s Restaurant in South Portland, as he’s done most weeks since this season of “Survivor” started.
On Wednesday’s episode, Foley again proved that “playing the game,” as “Survivor” contestants call the cajoling and deception that helps them to remain on the show, doesn’t always mean winning everyone over or winning the most challenges. Foley did neither of those things Wednesday, but did win enough friends to survive another week.
Not everyone on Wednesday’s episode wanted him to stay, though. Two people voted for him to leave, but instead contestant Shirin Oskooi was voted off. She got three votes.
On the April 8 episode, Foley complained about Oskooi’s behavior and verbal ramblings and said that someone should “slap” her. On Twitter, “Survivor” fans called Foley’s behavior “truly repugnant” and called Foley a “disgusting pig.”
The next episode of “Survivor” will air May 6 at 8 p.m. The finale will air May 20.
