Bar Harbor is competing with 63 other communities for the title of Outside magazine’s best town in America.

Readers could begin voting online Monday for any one of 60 cities and towns, selected by the editors of the Santa Fe-based magazine, that feature “top notch restaurants, vibrant farmers’ markets, friendly neighborhoods, and unparalleled access to hiking and biking trails. In short the perfect jumping off point for adventure.”

Four additional communities were nominated by the magazine’s Instagram followers.

Downtown Bar Harbor, which is within easy walking and biking distance of Acadia National Park, is going up against the city of Pittsburgh in Round 1 of the competition. As of Monday evening, Bar Harbor was crushing Pittsburgh, with 1,901 votes to 470.

Suzanne Bella Byowitz, a spokeswoman for Outside magazine, said each round of voting will last five days. If Bar Harbor defeats Pittsburgh, it will face the winner of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and New Haven, Connecticut. Portsmouth was leading with 1,262 votes to New Haven’s 813 votes.

Outside magazine will do short profiles on the final 16 communities in its September issue, with the winner getting a full-length story, according to Byowitz. Outside bills itself as the nation’s premier active and adventure lifestyle magazine.
