AUGUSTA — City police issued 15 summonses for underage drinking and made an arrest during the wee hours Saturday morning after responding to a report a loud party on South Belfast Avenue.

Officers were sent at 1:22 a.m. to a residence in response to a report of a “party that was getting out of control,” and they arrived to find an underage drinking party, according to a news release from Deputy Chief Jared Mills.

Police said they stopped several people who were trying to leave either on foot or in a vehicle, and they were detained while “officers worked to coordinate with their parents to ensure their safe return home,” the release said.

Police issued 15 summonses for underage drinking, with most of the violators being teenagers under the age of 18. In addition, Michael Clark, 19, of Augusta, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and charged with being a minor while consuming liquor, as was 20-year-old Walter Curtis, of Winthrop.

“The Augusta Police Department is bringing this incident to everyone’s attention as a reminder of the dangers of underage drinking and the consequences,” Mills said in the release. “The summer has just begun and this incident could have ended with some tragic outcome as many have in the past. Parents and teenagers please be responsible and have these conversations to avoid tragedies involving underage drinking this summer and in the future.”
