NORRIDGEWOCK — A three-vehicle pileup late Friday afternoon on Route 139 sent two drivers to the hospital, one by LifeFlight helicopter.

Two pickup trucks and a Jeep Cherokee collided around 3:53 p.m. after the Jeep stopped to make a left turn onto Waterville Road, which is Route 139, according to a news release sent by Cpl. Ritchie Putnam, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Michael Heath, 44, of Norridgewock, was stopped to make a turn into a mobile home park on Benjamin Drive when a 2014 GMC pickup truck traveling behind Heath, driven by Ryan Nickerson, 28, of Norridgewock, rear-ended the Jeep, according to the release.

The collision pushed the Jeep into the southbound lane, where it was struck by an oncoming 2015 Ford pickup truck driven by Steve Baumann, 45, of Falmouth.

Heath had to be extricated from the Jeep and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. His condition wasn’t available Friday night.

Baumann was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where he still was being assessed Friday night in the emergency department.

Nickerson was not injured.

Al Cochran, who owns the park, was turning onto Route 139 when he saw the accident.

“It happened so quick,” Cochran said.

Debris from the vehicles hung in the trees as residents of the adjacent trailer park came out to look. Cochran said it was a bad area where several accidents have occurred.

The Somerset sheriff’s office, Redington Fairview EMS, the Anson Madison Ambulance Service and the Norridgewock Fire Department worked quickly to secure the scene and tend to the injured.

One lane of the highway remained open, but northbound traffic backed up more than a mile.
