A few things as we wrap up the Maine Amateur at Waterville Country Club:
• John Hayes IV was the third first time winner in the last four years. Andrew Slattery won at the Woodlands last year, and Seth Sweet won at Sunday River in 2012. In 2013, Ricky Jones won the Maine Am for the third time. Hayes joins Jones and Ryan Gay as winners of both the Maine Am and the Match Play Championship.
• The toughest hole of the tournament was the par 3, 190 yard hole six. Only 15 birdies were scored on six over the three day tournament. Players combined to bogey or worse hole six 156 times.
• The easiest hole was the par 5, 505 yard hole nine. Seventy-nine birdies were made on nine over the course of the tournament, along with two eagles.
A close second for easiest hole was Waterville’s other par 5, the 478 yard hole three. Sixty-four birdies were scored on three, as well as six eagles.
• While Mark Plummer holds a record 13 Maine Am titles, his second place finish this year was his best finish since taking second place in 2008 at Biddeford-Saco Country Club. Plummer now has seven second place finishes in the Maine Am to go with his 13 championship.

The Maine Women’s Amateur Championship committee is now accepting nominations for the Abby Spector Award. The award goes to an outstanding woman golfer who exemplifies the characteristics that have made Spector an influential and inspirational figue in Maine women’s golf.
Criteria include contributions to the game, to Maine women’s golf, and settting an example to other golfers.
Nomination forms and full candidate criteria are available on the web sites of the Maine State Golf Association (www.mesga.org), the Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association (www.smwga.com) and the Women’s Maine State Golf Association (www.wmsga.org).

Registration for the Maine Women’s Amateur Championship is open through Friday. The three-day tournament will crown Maine’s champion amateur women golfer, as well as Maine’s junior champion and Maine’s representatives at the USGA State Team Championship.
The tournament will be July 27-29 at Biddeford-Saco Country Club.
Golfers may register at any of the following web site: Maine State Golf Association (www.mesga.org), the Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association (www.smwga.com) and the Women’s Maine State Golf Association (www.wmsga.org).
The top scorers at the Maine Women’s Am will be eligible to join the Maine team for the USGA Women’s State Team Championship, Sept. 10-12 at the Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The format of the Women’s Am is 54 holes of medal play. Last year’s champions will tee off first, and pairings are then based on handicap index.

Madison native Seth Sweet picked up a big win in late June, when he won the Hilton Head Amateur Championship tournament at Hampton Hall Golf Club in Bluffton, S.C.
Sweet scored a 213 over the three-day tournament, beating Trent Hoisington by one stroke. The Maine high school Class C state champion in 2010 and 2011, Sweet will be a senior at Old Dominion University in the fall. Sweet won the 2012 Maine Amateur title.
