The DAR Good Citizens Committee recognizes and rewards a senior who exemplifies the qualities of a good citizen — dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The recipient receives a pin, certificate and wallet recognition card. This student is then eligible, if he or she wishes, to enter the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest by writing an essay on a topic that he or she receives only minutes before writing.

This year, the chapter had history essays from the sixth grade at St. John Regional Catholic School in Winslow. Julia Bard was the first-place winner. She is the daughter of Ryan and Mary Bard, of Sidney. Julia’s interests at school include reading, writing, art and Odyssey of the Mind. She enjoys swimming, Girl Scouts, and playing the violin. Juila’s essay was sent on the state level and she won first place in the state for sixth grade. She was honored at the annual DAR State Conference tea at the Senator Inn in Augusta. Her essay has been sent to the Northeast Division for further judging.
