A Burnham man is being held without bail at the Waldo County Correctional Center in Belfast after allegedly violating a protection order during a domestic argument, police said.

Robert Later, 35, is charged with domestic assault, criminal restraint, obstructing the report of a crime and violation of a protection order, according to a news release Thursday from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies from the sheriff’s office responded to a report of domestic disturbance shortly after midnight Wednesday at a residence on South Horseback Road in Burnham, according to the release.

During the investigation, the deputies learned that the woman had agreed to meet and talk with Later, her estranged boyfriend, to discuss their relationship and children. They began to argue, and when the woman tried to leave, Later refused to let her go and obstructed her ability to leave the residence, the release said.

The woman said Later physically restrained her and took her phone so she couldn’t call for help. At the time, the woman had an active protection order prohibiting Later from having contact with her.

Because of alleged violation of a protection order, Later is being held without bail.
