A pair of accidents Monday on the Maine Turnpike in York County, one involving a tractor-trailer loaded with bottled water, caused significant traffic delays.
The tractor-trailer, driven by Francisco Reyes-Rodriquez of New Jersey and hauling 48,000 pounds of Poland Spring bottled water, overturned near mile marker 12 in York at 2:50 a.m. Monday.
The accident closed two of the three southbound lanes. One of the northbound lanes also was closed while crews cleared debris.
Reyes-Rodriquez told police he sensed a mechanical problem with the vehicle when it went from the roadway into the center guardrail and flipped on its side.
He suffered a minor cut on his head. An unidentified passenger in the truck’s sleeping berth was not injured, according to The Associated Press.
Investigators, however, determined that the vehicle had no mechanical issues and they believe the cause of the crash was likely driver fatigue.
Reyes-Rodriquez was given a summons for logbook violations.
Later Monday morning, near mile marker 14 southbound in Ogunquit, a crash sent three cars into the median. No injuries were reported by Maine State Police.
The second crash was cleared shortly before noon, according to the Maine Turnpike Authority.
The tractor-trailer crash was cleared shortly after 1 p.m.
