The Coast Guard has located a kayaker reported missing Tuesday night near Swan’s Island.
The Coast Guard began searching for 18-year-old Jackson Day Tuesday night after his mother reported he was overdue from a kayak trip. He was found safe Wednesday morning near Mackerel Cove off Swan’s Island, according to the Coast Guard.
Chief Christopher Guilmette of the Coast Guard command center in South Portland said Wednesday morning the Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol are continuing to search for Day.
Day was last seen at 10 a.m. Tuesday leaving the Swan’s Island ferry terminal in an 8-foot kayak, according to the Coast Guard. He is a summer resident of Swan’s Island, which is near Mount Desert Island.
On Tuesday night, the search included two 47-foot motor lifeboats from the Coast Guard station in Southwest Harbor, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Cape Cod, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine Marine Patrol.
