A Massachusetts man has died of injuries he suffered Aug.30 in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Route 2 in Mercer.

Clifford Berry, 60, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was traveling east and attempting to make a right turn onto Valley Road when the crash took place, according to Cpl. David Cole, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. He was not wearing a helmet and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Berry died of his injuries on Sunday, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. Cole said later that the accident occurred because Berry, trying to turn right, leaned too much, causing his foot peg to dig into the pavement, and he lost control of the motorcycle.

To date, there have been 26 fatalities resulting from motorcycle crashes in 2015, according to the release. Four people were killed over the weekend in three motorcycle crashes in Maine, the release said.

In addition, a 40-year-old man was killed Monday when he lost control of his motorcycle on Route 89 in Caribou.

In 2014, there were 11 fatalities from motorcycle crashes in the state. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety said 2015 is the deadliest year for motorcycle deaths in the state since 1991, when 34 people died in motorcycle crashes. Both 2012 and 2009 ended with 24 motorcycle deaths.
