Maine Democrats’ biggest annual fundraiser will be renamed in honor of former Maine Sen. George Mitchell, longtime Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, President Franklin D. Roosevelt or a combination of the three.

The party has closed the window on the vote for a new name for its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. Democrats took suggestions from around the state and settled on five finalists. They are Frances Perkins Dinner, George Mitchell Dinner, Franklin D. Roosevelt Dinner, Perkins-Mitchell Dinner and Roosevelt-Perkins Dinner.

The event is Oct. 30. Voting closed at midnight Tuesday after members took to social media to lobby for their favorite.

Many state Democratic parties are considering ending their associations with Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson because of the former presidents’ ties to slavery.
