WATERVILLE — A teenage girl was injured late Wednesday afternoon when she was hit by a car after running through stopped traffic on Silver Street.
The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. The 14-year-old was taken to Inland Hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening, according to Sgt. Brian Gardiner. The girl’s name wasn’t released.
Steve Kent, the driver of the SUV that hit the girl, said at the scene that he did not see her until she banged into the side of his red GMC Jimmy.
Kent was heading toward his Union Place home when the girl darted out from between a pickup truck and a minivan stopped at a red light at the intersection of Elm and Silver Streets and hit his moving SUV.
“Next thing you know, she was right there next to my vehicle,” Kent said, adding that he swerved when he saw her, but she hit the driver’s side mirror and the windshield. Kent said he stopped immediately after the collision.
The driver of the truck the girl ran out in front of, who did not give his name, said she ran through the stopped cars without looking in the other direction to see if there was any traffic coming.
About two dozen onlookers watched medics from Delta Ambulance service put the girl on a stretcher and take her into a waiting ambulance. After the scene cleared, police retrieved a bright pink backpack the girl had been wearing from the asphalt.
“If she would have walked, I would have stopped for her,” Kent said. “It isn’t what I wanted. I didn’t want to see anyone get hurt.”
