READFIELD — Maranacook High School will present the musical comedy-drama “Fiddler on the Roof” by Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, through Saturday, Nov. 21, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22.
The musical, which opened on Broadway in 1964, is set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. The show was the first musical to hit the 3,000 performance mark, and until it was surpassed by “Grease,” was the longest-running Broadway show for almost 10 years.
The devout Jewish milkman, Tevye, (played by Hazen Searway), is a devoted father and husband who is trying to hold his family together as tradition would have it, but times are changing and Tevye reluctantly lets go of some of his proud tradition in order to hold onto his family’s love. He and his wife, Golde (played by Mira Moreau), have an endearing banter back and forth as they come to terms with new traditions.
Tevye and Golde have five daughters who challenge their parents with their choices of love. Instead of following the tradition of using the town’s matchmaker, Yente (Janika Pakulski), the eldest daughter, Tzeitel (Ariana Wiles) chooses to follow her heart and marries a poor tailor, Motel (Jarred Schmidt). She receives her father’s blessing after her father had already promised her hand to a much older, widowed butcher, Lazar Wolf (Gavin Diou-Cass). Hodel (Abby Despres) informs her father of her wedding plans to a teacher, Perchik (Colin Liscord), and Chava (Ally Phair) also forgoes the tradition of a matchmaker and runs away to Krakow to wed a Russian, Fyedka (Levi Wiles).
Fiddlers for the performance are Jaycee Greeley, Luke Bartol and Katie Ide.
The performance is directed by Drew Albert with musical direction by Adam Scarpone. Tara Wicks provides choreography. Costume assistance is headed by Linda Wiles, Doris Schessler and Linda Diou-Cass.
