The search for an Ellsworth man believed to be missing in Acadia National Park was called off Sunday morning, and may not resume for months.
The search for Timothy Philpott, 50, last seen in Ellsworth on Tuesday, was launched in the park on Thursday. His car was spotted in the Parkman Mountain parking area on Wednesday. Park employees believe his car was parked there the day before.
Employees searched around the parking lot and tried calling him but failed to spot him or make contact.
Park spokesman John Kelly said Sunday the tough weather conditions made it too difficult to continue the search safely. The park received 7 to 8 inches of new snow Saturday night.
Kelly said the search has been reclassified as a recovery effort, and will not get underway until the snow is clear, possibly not until the spring.
The searched involved about 25 volunteers and professionals from the National Park Service, Maine Association for Search and Rescue, Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue, the Maine Warden Service and the Maine Forest Service. It included several search dog teams and airplane and helicopter searches.
