WATERVILLE — Libby Mitchell is scheduled to speak during the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce’s Leading Women’s Luncheon set for 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at O’Brien’s Event Center. The luncheon is a series of events organized quarterly by the chamber and sponsored by Anthem, according to a news release from the chamber.
Libby Mitchell practices law with her husband, Jim, at Mitchell and Davis. She is also a court mediator and a rostered Guardian Ad Litem. She served in the Maine Legislature from 1974 until 2010, when she left to run for governor as her party’s nominee. During her tenure in the House, she became the first woman Speaker and was chairwoman of several different committees including the Joint Standing Committee on Education and the Joint Standing Committee on Banking and Insurance, according to the release. During her tenure in the Senate, she was elected President of the Senate. She was the first woman in the country to preside over both chambers. She championed access to higher education, early childhood education, affordable housing, the arts and economic development.
She served for four years as director of the Maine State Housing Authority. She was also Chair of the Board of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.
In her community, she served as selectwoman for several years. She also was a long-time member of the board of MaineGeneral Health as well as Kennebec Valley Community College.
Registration for the event will cost $20 for chamber members through this week, or $25 general admission, which includes admission and luncheon buffet.
