FORT MYERS, Fla. — Mookie Betts hit his fourth home run of the spring and Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run shot as the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Saturday. The game was called after five innings because of rain.

Joe Kelly pitched 42/3 innings for the Red Sox, giving up five hits and striking out five. Carlos Peguero homered for the Cardinals with two outs in the fourth.

Michael Wacha went four innings for the Cardinals, allowing seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Of Wacha’s 30 starts in 2015, eight had weather-related delays totaling 7 hours and 15 minutes.

TIGERS: Center fielder Cameron Maybin is likely to miss opening day while recovering from a fractured left wrist.

Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus said Saturday that Maybin’s wrist isn’t healing quickly enough for him to be ready. Detroit starts the season April 5 at Miami.

Anthony Gose is expected to start in center with Maybin out.

NATIONALS: After being told his right rotator cuff was “significantly torn” and calling 30 of his closest friends to tell them it looked as if his career was over, Washington pitcher Bronson Arroyo received some good news on Saturday.

Although there is still some damage and inflammation, team doctors compared his most recent MRI to one taken in 2014 and said there is a chance he will still be able to pitch after going through rehabilitation.

The Nationals announced Saturday the 39-year-old right-hander will be shut down for the next seven days to two weeks, after which he will begin a shoulder strengthening program and a throwing program.

The rehab process is expected to take four to six weeks, at which time Arroyo will be re-evaluated.

Arroyo has not pitched in the majors since June 14, 2014, after which he underwent Tommy John surgery. He also had a partially torn rotator cuff repaired at that time.

CARDINALS: St. Louis tried to fill its big hole at shortstop, signing Ruben Tejada shortly after he was cut by the New York Mets.

The NL Central champion Cardinals needed help after star shortstop Jhonny Peralta had surgery on his left thumb earlier this month. Injured while diving for a ball, Peralta was expected to miss two to three months.

Tejada was released by the Mets on Wednesday. The 26-year-old free agent said there were talks with four or five teams before he joined the Cardinals with a one-year, $1.5 million guaranteed contract.

METS: Matt Harvey was scheduled to start against the Nationals, but instead was held back because of the threat of inclement weather. The Mets’ game was eventually postponed.

New York’s opening day starter instead faced St. Louis minor leaguers and gave up six runs and seven hits in 31/3 innings.

Harvey threw 71 pitches and struck out five.

BLUE JAYS: First baseman/DH Edwin Encarnacion (strained oblique) continues to improve in his individual rehabilitation program, but there has been no date set for his spring training debut, Toronto Manager John Gibbons said.

The two-time All-Star has missed all 18 games recovering from injury, including an abscessed tooth that was pulled on Feb. 28.

WHITE SOX: The head of the Major League Baseball players’ union said there’s no decision yet on whether to file a grievance on behalf of Chicago White Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche.

The 36-year-old LaRoche retired on Tuesday after he said he was told by the team president to cut down on clubhouse access for his 14-year-old son.

“I think what you’ve seen is everyone trying to get a feel for what happened here and what tomorrow may look like,” union chief Tony Clark said after a meeting with San Diego Padres players at spring training. “All I can tell you is we’re monitoring what’s going on.”

YANKEES: Jacoby Ellsbury was hit on the right wrist by a pitch from Atlanta’s Julio Teheran during the fifth inning of New York’s 3-2 win over the Braves.

Ellsbury went to a hospital, and Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said a CT scan and X-rays were negative.

Ellsbury was hurt just as New York Manager Joe Girardi was speaking on the Yankees’ television broadcast about the importance of keeping the center fielder and leadoff hitter healthy.
