WHITEFIELD – Built in 1984, this is a double envelope house – that is, it’s passive solar, with a rear-of-the-building solarium collecting heat, which then circulates through the first level and up to the second, “enveloping” the interior in warmth. How effective this method is was easy to judge on a visit on Tuesday morning, April 5.

The sun was shining across the big back yard, and the outside temperature was 30 degrees, if that. But the house was warm enough that neither the monitor heater nor the pellet stove on its slate-and-brick hearth had to be fired up.

Energy efficiency which includes on-demand hot water, is just one of this home’s advantages. An affordable list price of $174,000 is another. Contractors and others will appreciate the newer, oversized garage, which can accommodate four vehicles tandem.

A convenient location – just five miles to Gardiner – is a plus, and so is the 2.5-acre lot, with its privacy; great gardening potential (there is even a stand of Christmas trees growing); and stone patios on both front and side.

As for the 1,620-square-foot home, it’s naturally bright thanks to all its southerly-oriented windows and skylights and atrium doors, and naturally “warmed” by extensive wood paneling. Beneath exposed beams, the main level is essentially open-concept, with solarium, updated kitchen, living area and oak-floored dining space flowing together.

Upstairs, the full bath with soaking tub is big and bright and new, and also houses the laundry (dryer only). The three bedrooms are good-sized, the master especially.
