GARDINER — Demolition was completed Tuesday of the former Janelle’s Family Restaurant to pave the way for new construction on the site.

Earlier this month, the Gardiner Planning Board approved an application by Families Matter Inc. to build a 3,100-square-foot, single-story office building at 321 Brunswick Ave.

The building will be used for offices and supporting activities for the nonprofit organization, which provides adult community support services for adults with special needs and targeted case management services to children with behavioral health needs. Families Matter operates programs in Augusta, Farmingdale, Farmington, Skowhegan and Waterville

The city of Gardiner values the property at $126,300, which consists of $60,100 for the land and $66,200 for the building.

Families Matter bought the property from Ray Janelle Jr. Online reviews for the restaurant noted that it was for sale in 2013. In recent years, the property has stood vacant.
