Westbrook police and other agencies are investigating reports of a scam in which a man with a Hispanic accent is calling men and demanding money to release the victim’s wife or girlfriend, whom he says he is holding hostage.

He has said that if they call police, the woman will be shot, according to Westbrook Police, in a release.

Police have spoken with the women, who told police they had not been threatened or held hostage.

The Westbrook Police Department is asking anyone who receives such a call or has information about the scam to contact their local law enforcement agency and not to wire money.
