Richmond firefighters doused a small fire early Wednesday morning at a medical marijuana growing operation on Toothaker Road, Richmond police Chief Scott MacMaster said.

The grow operation was housed in a old construction trailer, MacMaster said, and the blaze erupted when an agricultural grow lamp fell on the floor.

MacMaster confirmed that the operation is legal and licensed with the state, but he did not know the name of the operation’s owner. A different person owns the land on which the construction trailer stands, he added.

It took less than an hour for firefighters to extinguish the fire, which was reported about 6:30 a.m. by a newspaper delivery person who was in the area and noticed smoke coming out of the structure, said Chief Matt Roberge, of the Richmond Fire Department. No one was around at the time and the fire burned a hole in the floor of the construction trailer.

Some of the flames had spread below the floor, but “we were able to put it out quickly,” Roberge said.
