ATHENS — Award-winning bluegrass and gospel duo Ken and Jane Brooks will highlight the annual Family Fun Day on Saturday in Athens. The annual event, sponsored by the Athens Recreation Department, offers food, fireworks, rides and games and free admission to the fairgrounds on Main Street.

Event organizer Victoria Avery said the day’s events begin at noon with the opening of the rides on the fairgrounds.

This year’s attractions include Zorbs, or human hamster balls, in which participants roll downhill inside an orb made of transparent plastic. Rides also include The Rat Race, which is an inflatable obstacle course. There also will be a water slide and a bounce house for smaller children, according to Avery.

Other attractions Saturday are to include a barnyard by Tessier’s Farm; a frog jumping contest at 12:30 p.m., in which participants are asked to bring their own frogs; a basketball competition at 1 p.m.; and Fire Department games at 2 p.m. Events are scheduled for the entire day with $5 meals, a pie auction and, at 6:30 p.m., a performance by Ken and Jane Brooks.

The pair perform vintage acoustic music in the folk and classic country style. Ken Brooks is a member of the Maine Music Hall of Fame, and the couple received the Vocal Duo of the Year Award from the Maine County Music Association in 2012 and Vocal Duo of the Year in 2014 from the Maine Academy of Country Music.

Fireworks by Central Maine Pyrotechnics are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
