A fire that spread from a cooking pan to window curtains to cabinets forced a woman from her Farmingdale apartment Sunday afternoon.

Farmingdale Fire Chief Dana Mealey said Monday that no one was hurt, and firefighters had the blaze under control in about 10 minutes.

The fire was reported just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday at 29 Hill St., Apartment 1C.

“Flames were showing from the window when we got there,” Mealey said. He said the fire squad had to bring a charged water line into the building to put out the fire, which had spread to the ceiling.

He said the tenant had been cooking french fries on a stove and put the pan into the sink and put water in it, but the fire spread to the curtains.

Mealey said the apartment had some smoke and water damage.

He termed the fire “an unfortunate accident.”

Firefighters evacuated the other tenants as a precaution and had to force open the upstairs apartment door to check for fire because no one was home, Mealey said. He said that door was to be replaced Tuesday morning.

The woman whose kitchen was damaged went to stay with one of her sons for the night, Mealy said. He said he did not know her name.

Mealey also said the building owner indicated another apartment might be available for the tenant while hers is being repaired.

Firefighters from Gardiner, Hallowell, Pittston and West Gardiner also arrived to assist the Farmingdale crew.

Firefighters remained at the scene for about an hour, Mealey said.
