WATERVILLE — Tournament MVP Patrick Stewart scored a game-high 19 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, to lead the Colby College men’s basketball team to an 81-63 win over Fitchburg State in the championship game of the Colby Classic at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Mules (2-0) blew open a close game with a 10-0 run midway through the second half. Stewart netted 13 of his points after halftime.

Max Steiner added 12 points and 14 rebounds for Colby.

UNE 69, UMF 67: Drew Coveney scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Nor’easters (1-1) in the Charlie Ryan Classic at Thomas College.

Isaac Witham scored a game-high 28 points for the Beavers (0-2).

No. 23 WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 44, HUSSON 27: Anthony Service threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading the Golden Bears in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Service totaled 277 yards of offense, as Western New England (11-0) broke open a tie score at halftime with 30 points in the second half.

Sophomore Cory Brandon completed 17 of 33 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns for Husson (9-2).

CROSS COUNTRY

CHELIMO SHINES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Colby College senior David Chelimo, who missed all of last year with an injury, finished 11th in the NCAA cross country national championships in Louisville, Kentucky, to earn All-American status for the second time in his career.

Chelimo covered the course in a time of 24:38.1 to place third among all New England participants.
