AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Valley Humane Society has launched its Barn Buddies program with a goal of saving the lives of vulnerable cats that have been previously considered unadoptable. These cats may not be appropriate for traditional home living situations, according to a KVHS news release.

Cats in the program may be born in the wild and/or under socialized communities that prefer little contact with humans. The goal of the program is to identify outdoor living options with shelter, food and regular care for these cats.

“At KVHS, our goal continues to be to save the lives of animals. When free roaming community cats or lesser socialized cats arrive at our local shelter we often cannot place them because they aren’t suitable for traditional home life. However, through our Bard Buddy program we are hoping to find community members with barns, stables, warehouses, or other outdoor structures that would like to join with us to help provide a second chance to these cats,” said Hillary Roberts, KVHS executive director, in the release.

Roberts goes on to say that the shelter for the cats must be warm and secure and the adopter must provide regular food and water to the cats. The barn cats will also help control rodent populations, which can be an asset to property owners or farmers.

“These cats aren’t definitely aren’t cuddle bugs, but our team at KVHS still believes that they deserve a happy life. Our vision is to place cats through the Barn Buddies program with families, individuals, or business owners who share our goal to save their lives through outdoor placement” said Roberts in the release.

She also states that cats in the Barn Buddy program have been spayed or neutered and will have received a one year rabies vaccination. These cats may have been under socialized with humans, but KVHS recommends adopting two Barn Buddies so that they have a companion in their new living situation. KVHS is requesting $25 donations for these cats to help cover the cost of their care and medical services while at KVHS.

The Kennebec Valley Humane Society provides food, shelter, medical care, and a second chance for nearly 2,000 animals every year from 22 local communities.
