A Portland fishing boat captain was cited for setting off a mortar-style fireworks from his boat early Thursday morning, alarming residents and drawing five calls to police.

Russell Parmenter, 36, was entertaining guests on his fishing boat, the Patricia Ann as it was tied up at the Maine Wharf, when he set off a series of firework blasts about 1:39 a.m., said Police Lt. Robert Martin.

The calls came from Portland and South Portland, Martin said.

Police issued Parmenter a civil citation for the infraction, and officers confiscated some of the fireworks, Martin said.

Parmenter could face a fine of between $50 and $500, depending on whether he has been cited for fireworks ordinance infractions before.
