Arts, crafts, music, games and food will abound in Winthrop this weekend as the town celebrates its annual, downtown summer festival on Saturday and Sunday.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, a variety of media — stained glass, painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, fabrics, fine crafts and music — will be displayed, created and performed as part of the 30th annual Sidewalk Arts Festival, according to a news release from one of the event’s sponsors, the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce.
There will be a couple opportunities for members of the public to create art over the weekend.
Throughout Saturday, community members of all ages will be invited to help create a stained-glass mosaic with local artist Faith Benedetti. The project will take place at 130 Main St. and, according to Benedetti’s Facebook page, eventually hang in Town Hall.
Also on Saturday, children will be able to use chalk as they listen to storybooks being read at Norcross Point from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. At Bailey Public Library, there will be a children’s, nature-themed arts program and a reading party from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Then on Sunday, people of all ages and abilities will be invited to help repaint a mural behind the Winthrop Grade School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Art will be displayed throughout Saturday, and local churches, including Winthrop Congregational Church and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, will host bake sales, vendors, silent auctions and other activities.
Other activities for children will take place on Saturday, including recreational pickle ball and a children’s game known as Ga Ga, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. next to the town’s tennis courts.
On Saturday evening, a barbecue and gumbo dinner will be served behind Winthrop Grade School from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with proceeds going to programs that benefit the hungry and live music being performed. The dinner will cost $15 per person and $50 for a family.
Saturday’s events will conclude with concerts at Norcross Point from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Then on Sunday, the summer festival will end with more concerts at Norcross Point from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
