The Novel Jazz Septet will perform an evening of jazz by American jazz masters Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the historic Grange, 357 Main St. in East Vassalboro.

This septet has been performing Ellington/Strayhorn summer concerts around Maine and New Hampshire for the last 13 years. The musicians of this group have been playing straight-ahead jazz for audiences throughout Maine (and beyond) for several decades.

The musicians are Herb Maine on bass, Mickey Felder on piano, David Clark on guitar, Sean Potter on alto, Bill Manning on drums, Michael Mitchell on trumpet and Barney Balch on trombone.

Many years ago, the band decided to forge deeper into the music of Duke Ellington and his musical collaborator Billy Strayhorn. Balch began regular visits to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. to work in the Duke Ellington collection, digging out gems by both Ellington and Strayhorn, bringing them back to life in summer time concerts. All the members of Novel Jazz contribute arrangements to the shows.

Admission will cost $15.
