SKOWHEGAN — Downtown Skowhegan artist Steve Leakos is planning an art contest for Saturday for anyone 18 and older and is offering cash prizes. The contest is to be held on the sidewalk outside Leakos’ art gallery, at 69 Water St. in Skowhegan.

The Skowhegan native said entries will be accepted after 8 a.m. Saturday, with judging to commence at 10 a.m. He’s calling it the First Annual Skowhegan Maine Backwoods Art Contest and said it will be judged in three categories: painting, photography and sculpture. Art pieces can be no smaller than 8 inches and no larger than 42 inches.

There are to be three winners. The top prize is $10, followed by $5 for second place and $2 for third place, plus printed ribbons.

Leakos says in his painted sign announcing the contest that if it is raining Saturday, the contest will be held on the next Saturday when the weather is better.
