NEW VINEYARD — Firefigthers from at least two towns on Wednesday battled a fire on the second floor of a home on High Street.

When the first fire crews arrived, they reported flames and smoke coming from the second floor of the building at 2 High St.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which was reported at 4 p.m., but a family was burned out of their home.

Firefighters from Farmington and other towns joined crews from New Vineyard at the scene. Police blocked off a section of Route 27 while the fire was being fought.

An hour after the fire was reported, the American Red Cross sent out a bulletin advising that they were assisting a family of five left homeless by the blaze.

A New Vineyard fire official said crews were clearing the scene at 5:30 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
