AUGUSTA — A Westbrook-based engineering firm is moving its Hallowell office to Augusta later this year to take over a space on Water Street that has been vacant for several years.

Erik Urbanek, managing director of SVN The Urbanek Group, the leasing agent for the building, said last week that SGC Engineering is expected to move to 211 Water St. in the spring.

“We’re happy they have come down and chosen to be a part of the downtown Augusta revitalization,” Urbanek said. “We’re very excited to have them here.”

The deal comes after the property on the east side of Water Street and south of the Calumet Bridge at Old Fort Western has stood vacant for several years since the exit of Dirigo Health.

Urbanek said the company will occupy 7,500 square feet, which is an increase over the size of the company’s existing Hallowell office space. The lease has a five-year term.

Company officials considered locations in Hallowell and Augusta, and they chose the Water Street property in Augusta.

“We liked the riverfront, and we liked the property,” said Serena Antonowicz, project assistant for SGC Engineering.

Urbanek said work is planned to make the Water Street office more efficient, as well as some cosmetic changes and updates.

“They like having a deck on the river,” he said.

In the last several years, Water Street has been marked by the turnover in a number of businesses and other changes.

While new businesses, such as Cushnoc Brewing Co., Circa 1885 and Otto’s on the River opened during the year, others, such as Cosmic Charlie’s, announced they would close.

In July, a deal was struck to keep Key Plaza, a prominent Water Street building that houses hundreds of state workers, from being foreclosed on.

“It’s always exciting to add additional people to the downtown area, particularly in a space that hasn’t been leased in several years,” said Michael Hall, executive director of the Augusta Downtown Alliance. The alliance works to foster business growth and improve the quality of life in downtown Augusta.

In addition to its Westbrook headquarters, SGC Engineering has offices in Bangor; Hallowell; Presque Isle; Bristol, Vermont; Houston, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia.

The firm provides engineering, planning and design services to oil and gas pipeline companies, electric utilities, power producers and municipalities.
