Jonny St. Laurent, who is planning to resurrect Uncle Billy’s Southside Bar-B-Que in Portland later this year, confirmed that he has leased the former Abilene restaurant space at 539 Deering Ave. for a pop-up barbecue restaurant.

The new Uncle Billy’s (the original was in South Portland and closed in 1995) leased a spot at 166 Cumberland Ave. last year, but renovations have taken much longer than expected. St. Laurent said he hopes to open a smaller restaurant with a truncated menu in the former Abilene space sometime in early May, as soon as a custom smokehouse he’s ordered from Missouri has been delivered.

Even better news – he’s already shopping for 45’s for the restaurant’s jukebox.
