NEW SHARON — Just before 8 a.m. Friday, a school bus backed over a car behind it after the bus driver saw children arriving late at the stop.

According to a news release from Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols, the accident occurred on Industry Road.

The school bus driver, Bonita Oliver, 61, of Chesterville, had slowed at a bus stop near the intersection with Bassett Road, but she did not see any students, so she continued on her way.

As Oliver was driving away, the release states, she saw children walking toward the bus stop, so she stopped and put the bus into reverse. She did not see the black 1992 Mazda Miata behind her, which was being driven by Janet Kennedy, 69, of Industry. Oliver backed over the top of the Mazda.

Northstar Rescue went to the scene, but no injuries were reported.

Five children were on the bus at the time.
