Uber Eats, the national food delivery service, will be coming to Portland in mid-May.
To use Uber Eats, diners download the smartphone app and browse local restaurants that are signed up with the service. Then they order from the restaurant’s menu and track the delivery of their food, which arrives via car, bike or scooter. Like all food delivery services, there is a small surcharge – Uber Eats called it a “booking fee” – added to the bill. According to the Uber Eats website, the booking fee varies depending on the city and restaurant. Another local food delivery service, 2DineIn.com, charges $5 per order.
A spokeswoman for Uber Eats acknowledged that the service is coming to Portland “soon,” but would not give any other details.
The Truffle Truck, a new food truck that serves high-end Italian fare with shaved truffles, will be one of the first local businesses to partner with Uber Eats, according to its website. The truck will launch May 15, bringing dishes such as Carbonara Pasta with Maine Lobster and Truffle right to your door.
Uber Eats is available in more than 140 cities in North America.
