Two people were seriously hurt in a multiple motorcycle crash in Acton at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Injured were Jared Russell, 41, of Barrington, New Hampshire, and his wife and passenger, Jennifer Russell, 43.

York County Sheriff William King said in a press release that Russell was operating a 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle in a group of five motorcycles traveling south on Route 109 near the intersection of 10th Street in Acton at about 7 p.m. when he crashed into a 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Robert Welch, 41, of Exeter New Hampshire, who was carrying a passenger, Brenda Clevesy, 47, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Mark Driscoll, 56, of Hampton, New Hampshire.

Jared Russell, who appeared to have head injuries, was airlifted to Maine Medical Center while his wife, who also had serious head injuries, was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford and later transferred to Maine Medical Center, police said.

Both were in serious condition Sunday afternoon.

Welch and Clevesy were treated for injuries at the scene. Driscoll refused treatment at the scene but later sought medical treatment on his own, police said.

None of those involved in the crash were wearing helmets, police said.

The Welch and Russell motorcycles were towed from the scene while the Driscoll motorcycle was drivable.

Route 109 was closed for three-and-a-half hours.

Police said operator inexperience was a factor in the crash which is under investigation by the Sheriff’s office and the Maine Warden Service.
