The Willing Workers No. 4 met yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Daisy Ashton, Sabattus with 8 members present. The day was spent in sewing. The mystery box went to Mrs. Ethel Brackett. The next meeting will be held Mar. 30, with Miss Hazel Janes, Webster Street, Lewiston.
50 Years Ago: 1971
By a very narrow margin, the Parish Council of the Sacred Heart Church of Auburn voted Sunday night to recommend to Bishop Peter L. Gerety of Portland that Sacred Heart Parochial School be closed at the end of the current school year. Council members who favored closing of the school cited financial difficulties, and lack of teaching personnel, among their reasons. Louis M. Bellavance, council president, told the Journal today ‘the recommendation passed by a 6-5 margin. on a second vote. He said that during the meeting next year’s budget which calls for a tremendous cutback in teaching personnel, was presented, with a: recommendation from the Finance Committee the budget; not be accepted. A vote was taken on this recommendation and it ended in a 5-5 tie, with one member abstaining. Bellavance said the council then went into executive session: and, following this, there was a second vote. and the 6-5 margin prevailed. Bellavance said the fate of the school now lies squarely in the hands of the Bishop. A total of 14 teachers, nine Sisters and five lay teachers, are currently instructing the youngsters at the parochial school.

The YWCA of Lewiston-Auburn announces the return of Barbara Randall, who will take participants around the world with slides during the Box Car Lunch series on Wednesday at noon she will take those attending to Zimbabwe. The food served at the lunch will be reflective of the travel adventure on which she takes us with slides.
