Willard Beach in South Portland was closed overnight because of a reported fuel spill, News Center Maine reported Tuesday night.

The South Portland Fire Department responded to reports of a sheen in the water at the popular beach, Public Information Officer Robb Couture told News Center. Crews quickly found the film of fuel in the area of the storm water discharge and start mitigation efforts.

South Portland Water Resource Protection, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Coast Guard were working late Tuesday to determine the cause. The beach was expected to remain closed at least through Wednesday morning as crews survey the area in daylight.
